Filing and Forms
“Filing” is the process of giving the Clerk of the Court an official document to enter into a case’s files or records. Often, you’ll use a form to do so.
Filing Options
If you're an attorney or court reporter
You must file documents electronically using ACMS.
If you're representing yourself
You can file documents:
Electronically through ACMS
Electronically through the court's online submission system
By U.S. mail
By dropping them off at the Browning Courthouse in San Francisco
Motions
If you want to ask the court to do something in your case, you need to file a motion. A motion is a written request of the court.
Excerpts of Record
Excerpts of record are a set of lower court documents that the parties compile and file with the appeals court.
Complaints about Judges
If you have evidence of misconduct by a federal judge, you may file a complaint about them. You may also file a complaint if a disability prevents them from carrying out their duties.
